No, I Don't 'Do Nothing': My Holistic Approach to Flea, Tick, & Heartworm Prevention

Every spring, someone (in fact several people) asks me:
"So...you don't do anything for flea, tick or heartworm?"
Cue the internal eye roll, deep inhale and let's go....

The truth is, I do a LOT!
Just not what you're used to hearing from conventional medicine.
I don't believe in monthly neurotoxins. I believe in building the body's defenses - not bypassing them with chemicals. Here's how we approach pest & parasite prevention at Rawsome & our home.
What I Don't Do
I don't reach for pesticide drops, heartworm pills or chemical collars.
Why? Because these so-called "preventatives" are:
Neurotoxic to pets and pests alike
Burdening the liver & immune system
Damaging - no - COMPLETELY WRECKING the gut microbiome, where 70%+ of the immune defense lives
Suppressing parasites without supporting the host? That is NOT prevention - it is a short-term patch with long-term consequences.
What I Do Instead (And Why It Works)
True prevention starts by making your pet a less attractive host. Parasites are opportunistic - they go after the weakened, inflamed, or imbalanced bodies. Our approach builds vitality & terrain resilience, so pests don't stand a chance.
Prevention starts from the inside out. Here's what our approach includes:
Raw food – including our Heritage Pure Prey Turkey, Pork, and Beef — all pasture-raised and free of synthetics, Solutions Chicken, Beef, and Pork recipes and Oma’s Pride zero-synthetics blends
ION Gut Support to rebuild the gut lining and reduce inflammation
Ashwagandha and Astragalus root to modulate immunity and lower stress
Rawsome Mushroom Blends and coming soon Zen Blends to support immune balance, detox, and vitality
Solutions Parasite Free tincture as part of a seasonal clearing protocol
Midoricide sprays and Restore by CBD Dog for topical flea/tick defense — safe for pets and kids
Trail Guard powder (coming soon): A blend of DE, neem, and herbs for daily topical support
Every element is chosen to build resilience - not just repel pests. We aim to support the terrain so parasites don't feel welcome.
The Power of Cloves: Wake and Clear
A key step in our seasonal parasite-clearing protocol is using clove powder.
Why? Cloves help “wake up” dormant parasites — particularly in the early stages of a protocol. They stimulate the nervous system of parasites, drawing them out from hiding. Once active, they become more vulnerable to stronger follow-up agents later in the day, such as Parasite Free or bitter herbs.
Cloves also have antifungal and antimicrobial properties, making them a powerful ally in gut balance.
The Goal is BALANCE, Not Eradication
This Is a System — Not a Shortcut
Every element in our protocol is chosen to support the terrain. When the body is strong, balanced, and thriving, it becomes inhospitable to fleas, ticks, and internal parasites.
We don’t fear exposure — we focus on the body’s ability to respond. Fear does not build strength....
Fleas, ticks, and even heartworm-carrying mosquitoes are part of nature. The question isn't how to nuke them - it's how to make our pets' bodies strong, uninviting hosts.
And when exposures do happen? A healthy immune system can respond without spiraling into chronic illness.
So no - I don't "do nothing",
I do a lot. Thoughtfully. Intentionally. Seasonally.
Because true prevention means building strength, not fear.
